Byrd Hair is a small mens grooming brand out of Newport Beach, California intended for the perfect post surf hair grooming. With a range of products all targeted at the same consumer Byrd Hair is a very popular products for the man on the go, with style.
Although the product is very well produced their look felt juvenile and distant from the culture it is trying to reach. With a shift to a more modern look for the mark and a breath of vibrant colors the brand feels more inviting while still keeping it's edge with a bold san serif. The mark resembles a bird as well as the iconic hairstyle from the 50s which Byrd hair has positioned themselves behind . The addition of handwritten type as an accent helps the product keep it's feeling of a small local brand made with quality. The patterns created reflect the effect that the specific product is meant to have on the area applied. A lightweight tin material keeps this product perfect for someone on the move that can't be weighed down.
Lib Technologies is a well established brand in the snowboarding and action sports industry. Known for their innovative design in the camber or curvature of the snowboard that they refer to as a "banana" curve and their commitment to design all their products as eco friendly as possible.
Although Lib Tech has come a far way, their mark and branding haven't seem to evolve as much as their product innovation. The new mark is represents their "banana" technology as well as their constant strive to push the boundaries of what is possible in action sports design. While focusing on their wax product line it was important to keep in mind the companies philosophy on environmental design. The thought behind the pattern for the label was to use as much surface area as possible to reduce waste. The box itself is made out of a recycled cardboard material and patterned with angles reflecting the mark. When you pull out the wax's insert you'll notice that the edge is cut in steeping diagonals to emulate the topography that riders go over while enjoying the sport they love. Black and yellow were chosen as an homage to their heritage as well as a strong aesthetic that would drive consumers to investigate and interact with the product.

The angles and icons are symbols used to represent cutting and stitching of fabric as well as the washing instructions you'll find on most every article of clothing. The colors where chosen individually from each picture from what hues felt the strongest and gave that image it's feeling.
birdwell beach britches
Birdwell Beach Britches is an iconic swimwear company located in Santa Ana, California. Started by Carrie Birdwell Mann to confront the problem of foreign objects causing abrasions on surfers and lifeguards skin in the ocean. She made these swim trunks especially durable with two ply nylon material and a signature three-seam stitching around the waist.
The circle encompassing the mark represents their strong belief in family as well as a point of view from a lifeguard checking the waters conditions. The three waves represent the stitching that has made Birdies one of the most recognizable swimsuits in surfing culture. The waves sit lower in the circle to symbolize safety brought to surfers by the lifeguards who were the first consumers of the red trunks. A strong san serif, popular in 60s surf promotion, holds this mark together and speaks to the companies deep-rooted California history.
Fish Bar is a restaurant in Chicago started by 5 times James Beard nominee Chef, Michael Kornick. Serving creative and wholesome dishes with fresh seafood flown in everyday.
Their current branding needed to be shifted to match the elevated tastes and care put into each dish. The idea of combing organic and geometric in the logo mark stemmed from their fresh ingredients with a cutting edge approach to preparing and cooking the food. The strong diagonal line represents the fisherman and the angles used by their nets and poles used to make the catch which is so vital to the livelihood of this restaurant. The light blue has a calming effect on the menu while the pink accent holds the attention of the customer guiding them through an easily comprehensible menu.
publican quality meats
Publican Quality Meats is the main butcher shop and artisan market supplying Executive Chef, Paul Kahn's Chicago restaurant empire. It's a great place to find locally sourced meats, cheeses, and breads for the perfect picnic or to elevate any dish.
It was important to keep a hand crafted approach when considering design choices for this brand. Everything they do is in-house under extreme care and quality, which is something that should be reflected in their brands look and feel.
Paul's father was a very well known butcher in Chicago's meat packing industry, which is where he found his passion for food and cooking. Two knives in the mark reflect this relationship while the blades create a cloven hoof which represents Paul's love for cooking with pork products. Using hand drawn illustrations for patterning and branding is what brings things the idea of a product produced by someone directly with a close attention to detail and flavor.
